Thelma and Louise Writing Prompts
Use your notes to write a long paragraph (⅔ page) on one of the following prompts::
- Interpret the ending of the film? Why do you think the writer decided to end the film in this manner?
- Thelma and Louise was criticized as being “man hating”, “glorifying violence”, and “providing poor role models for young women.” Do you think any of these criticisms are fair? Does this criticism reveal anything about our society? If so, what?
- Write an analysis of either Thelma or Louise through the feminist lens. Make sure to consider how the character changed through the film and what events shaped their transformation.
- Is this film just about two women in a typical “road” film (a predominantly male genre where a couple of buddies escape the restrictions of society bent on individualistic satisfaction - think Motorcycle Diaries)? Are they just like any other “shoot first-talk later” action heroes? Have these two women just adopted traditional male attitudes and solutions? Does the substitution of women in a typically male role make it a “feminist” film?
- Compare the opening and closing frames to discuss the film’s meaning.
